Teepee Trellis
Durham, NH 2006
The Trellis was made as a growing installation that represented a traditional Three Sisters native American garden from the Wampanoag tribe. Beans were planted around the base of the trellis, surrounded by circles of squash with corn in the center. The squash leaves shade the ground for the beans, which add nitrogen to the soil, and the corn acts as a natural growing aid. The plants eventually cover the bare trellis, creating an edible summer shelter. The teepee provides shade and a well-balanced meal. Produce went to support the UNH Organic Garden.
